How Nightmare On Elm Street Influenced Jordan Peeles Us Soundtrack

Horror movies have been in a bit of a renaissance lately, with Jordan Peele's Get Out serving as the example of all the genre is capable of. Earning the new director an Academy Award, Get Out was a critical and financial success, while also being a significant moment in film history. All eyes are on what Peele will bring to theaters next, with the first glimpse of his upcoming horror flick Us arriving in the form of a trailer on Christmas Day.

The trailer for Us is tense and horrifying, showing yet another fascinating idea to come from Jordan Peele's creative mind. The trailer's backdrop is set to the song "I Got 5 On It" by Luniz. While starting off as a charming scene shared with the family in the car, the track becomes more insidious as Us falls into chaos. Now Peele has described why he chose that song, and how it actually relates to beloved horror franchise A Nightmare on Elm Street.

That song, it came pretty simple, I'm making a movie in Northern California, that's a bay area hip-hop classic and I wanted to explore this very relatable journey of being a parent [and] maybe some of the songs you listened to back in the day aren't appropriate for your kids. So that was one level, and another part was, I love songs that have a great feeling but also have a haunting element to them and I feel like the beat in that song has this inherent cryptic energy, almost reminiscent of the Nightmare on Elm Street soundtrack. So those were the ideas that that song hit the bullseye on for me, and also, it's just a dope track.

Jordan Peele has already shown that he's a director with a very specific vision, one that emanates from every frame of Get Out. It looks like Us has approached with the same level of care and specificity, including the film's soundtrack. "I Got 5 On It" has never been more horrifying, and it's a song that's abel to adapt with what's being shown onscreen.

In his conversation with EW, Jordan Peele also briefly mentioned how "I Got 5 On It" has some musical moments that feel reminiscent of the Nightmare on Elm Street soundtrack. While these aren't two songs that casual fans would have paired, there is some commonality in the haunting chimes of both songs. As a reference, you can hear the Nightmare on Elm Street soundtrack below:

While the two genres of music are nothing alike, the haunting bells are similar in both songs. And considering how much Jordan Peele loves the horror genre, this connection may have been the tipping point to including "I Got 5 On It" in Us, and the film's trailer.

Top Gun 2's Miles Teller Admits He's Struggling To Keep Up With Tom Cruise

In next years Top Gun: Maverick, Miles Teller plays Bradley Bradshaw, the son of Anthony Edwards Goose from the 1986 film. The character is expected to be the new protg of Tom Cruises Pete Maverick Mitchell, and as such hell have a lot to learn if the student is to become the master. Behind the scenes, Miles Teller too is learning from an action movie master in the form of Tom Cruise, and that is no easy thing.

On the long-awaited sequel, Miles Teller is struggling to keep up with the renowned pace and stunts of Tom Cruise. He admitted as much, saying:

Im certainly trying, but it is difficult. just the volume of it. Im sure a lot of people can do it for a couple days or a week, but can you do it month after month after month? Theres been nothing on this film that didnt take a lot of training to accomplish.

Much like achieving success at the Naval Fighter Weapons School, filming Top Gun: Maverick is proving to be quite the challenge for Miles Teller. The actor freely admits how difficult it is, and a big part of that has to do with keeping pace with Tom Cruise. The famous action star is known for his tireless work ethic and his never-ending supply of energy, and despite being 24 years Tom Cruises junior, Miles Teller is still struggling to keep up.

Filming any movie involves long hours and lots of hard work, but on Top Gun: Maverick, theres even more to it. As Miles Teller explains to The Wrap, it is the sheer volume of the work involved in the film, which included a great deal of training for the actors, that makes it so daunting and in turn makes Tom Cruises stamina throughout filming so impressive.

Miles Teller is no stranger to action movies, having starred in Fantastic Four, the Divergent series and Only the Brave, but it sounds like Top Gun: Maverick upped the difficulty to another level. The way Miles Teller describes it, this kind of filming and training would be more manageable if it only amounted to a few days or weeks, but months at a time is another story.

Its a marathon not a sprint, but Tom Cruise is setting a breakneck pace that everyone else has to keep up with.

This is what we would expect from Tom Cruise, who famously does his own stunts and gives his all to deliver the best possible movie for audiences. In Mission: Impossible - Fallout he flew a helicopter and broke his ankle, and, after a short recovery period, kept going. For Top Gun 2, Cruise will be doing some flying, albeit not in fighter jets, as well as motorcycle riding and who knows what else.

It sounds like filming Top Gun: Maverick and watching Tom Cruise work has been a great learning experience for Miles Teller and perhaps hearing about Tom Cruises stamina and all go work ethic will give Justin Bieber pause.

Marvel's Steven Broussard Talks Adding LGBTQ Characters

There are quite a few controversies and difficult conversations surrounding the world of Hollywood lately. Chief among them is the call for inclusion and on camera diversity, with whitewashing scandals, the #OscarsSoWhite campaign, and transgender representation all adding to the discussion. There has also been a call for more LGBT characters in major franchises and blockbusters, including Star Wars and the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The latter has made steps forward with female heroes and more actors of color, but when will they bring queer characters into the behemoth shared universe? Marvel producer Stephen Broussard (Ant-Man and The Wasp, Doctor Strange) recently spoke to this possibility, saying:

For sure, you will see that. I know it can be frustrating if you're part of a group that wants to see more representation and the answer is always 'stay tuned' - I can imagine that that's frustrating - but that is happening behind the scenes, you're going to be seeing that more and more. Representation across individual groups in the years ahead.

While vague and without a specific franchise or character to look out for, Stephen Broussard seems sure that the MCU will eventually including LGBT stories. Furthermore, he understands the frustration that certain Marvel fans and advocates are feeling about the lack of representation.

Stephen Broussard's comments to Den Of Geek prove one thing: that Marvel studios hears fan concerns, and is actively seeking ways to satiate the moviegoers who have spent the last decade seeing each new blockbuster. With Ant-Man and The Wasp marking Marvel's 20th blockbuster in theaters, the shared universe is going to have to find ways to keep the fandom's attention. And helping fans feel represented onscreen is certainly one solid strategy.

Marvel's willingness to adjust to the times can be seen through the choices made in the MCU's Phase Three. While the first two phases primarily focused on heroes who were both male and white, the most recent set of films have helped diversify the Marvel Shared Universe. Female characters are finally getting their time, with both Ant-Man and The Wasp and Captain Marvel being named after their female protagonists. Meanwhile Black Panther featured the MCU's first black leading man, while also including a stunning cast of legendary actors of color, and Spider-Man: Homecoming featured a diverse cast that properly represented the melting pot of New York City.

Although the MCU hasn't contained any queer stories, that isn't to say that the first LGBT character isn't already in existence. There are only a handful of romantic plot lines in Phase Three, so there's no way of knowing the sexuality for the majority of the shared universe's characters. Thor: Ragnarok actress Tessa Thompson revealed she played Valkyrie as a queer woman, although it wasn't expressly mentioned during the threequel's runtime.
