Star Trek Posts Powerful Tributes To Anton Yelchin On The Third Anniversary Of His Death

Three years ago, actor Anton Yelchin was killed in an unfortunate accident, at the young age of 27. In the wake of his devastating departure, fans and actors alike have mourned the passing of this talented actor who had so much life ahead of him, professionally and personally.

Now, on the third anniversary of his death, the Star Trek franchise has chosen to pay tribute to Anton Yelchins passing, with the following post on their social media feed:

Today is the actual day in 2016 that notes the passing of Anton Yelchin, who at the time had completed work on the third Trek film, Star Trek Beyond, as well as part of his work for the first season of the Dreamworks series, Trollhunters. Though several films would be released throughout 2017, with the independent film We Dont Belong Here marking his final film role released.

This particular anniversary is painful to acknowledge, as recent months have seen Anton Yelchins memory resurface through a documentary honoring his life and times, Love, Antosha. Along with that films debut came remembrances from co-stars such as Chris Pine, John Cho, and Kristin Stewart, as well as the revelation that Anton Yelchin was actually hiding his suffering from Cystic Fibrosis for almost a decade before his untimely death.

The official Star Trek Twitter wasnt the only tribute seen this morning, as fan site Trek Core also had their own tribute to Yelchin, courtesy of a recolored photo from his appearance in the reboot trilogy, where he played the role of Ensign Pavel Chekov:

Best known for the role of Checkov in Star Treks latest run of films, Anton Yelchin was admittedly nervous to try and live up to the precedent set by Walter Koenig in his initial run as the character. And any young actor jumping into a role as iconic as this one would have to be crazy not to feel that pressure.

However, as seen in the fandom that Anton Yelchin had acquired over his time in that role, as well as in numerous other projects like Fright Night, Green Room, and Thoroughbreds, his performances were strong to the point where that fear was unfounded. Perhaps the greatest impact that Yelchin has made on the Star Trek franchise is the fact that even with the fourth film in limbo, his Enterprise crewmates still think of him when discussing the process of getting another film into the air.

While Anton Yelchin is no longer with us, his career has left his fans with an indelible body of work that shows just how talented he was, both on and off the screen. Though we still mourn him, we also remember him as the bright presence he always brought to his work. And that is the most fitting tribute of all.

The documentary on Yelchins live, Love, Antosha is scheduled for an August 2nd release date.

Why Deadpool 2 Is Releasing A PG-13 Version, According To The Writers

Deadpool 2 came and went earlier this year, but we'll be visited by the Merc with the Mouth one last time before 2018 is over. It was announced at the end of September at that a PG-13 cut of Deadpool 2 will screen in theaters. For those wondering why this is happening, writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick told CinemaBlend's own Eric Eisenberg that they wanted the sequel to be accessible to a wider demographic, while also throwing in some new elements to entertain the older crowd who already watched Deadpool 2. As Reese put it:

There is that segment of the population who we've treated to a great disservice by not letting them see Deadpool, and we've sort of driven a wedge between parents and their tweener kids who aren't quite old enough to see it, and are bitter about it. And parents who were mad that Deadpool is of a certain rating, and that their kids whine all the time about it. So we're trying to serve that demographic, in particular. But we have introduced, without giving it away -- and you'll probably be able to see it on the Internet -- we've definitely introduced a new framing element to the story, and a new element to the story that will make it highly entertaining for adults to return, as well. That will probably appeal to them more than their children. Again, I'm not... we're not allowed to talk about it, but if you do a deep dive on the Internet, you may sniff it out.

Deadpool already stands out from other comic book protagonists thanks to his habit of breaking the fourth wall, but because 20th Century Fox was ok with the character's movies entering the R-rated realm (which the studio also later approved for Logan), that further helped Deadpool and Deadpool 2 distinguish themselves from other superhero movies, most of which are rated PG-13.

However, as Rhett Reese noted, embarking down that creative path also meant shutting out the younger fans who couldn't see these movies in theaters without being accompanied by an adult. So now this PG-13 Deadpool 2 provides an opportunity to let kids experience the fun, just without as much curse words, sexual innuendo and gore.

As for the framing element that Rhett Reese alluded to, he's talking about how the PG-13 Deadpool 2 will parody The Princess Bride, which Ryan Reynolds teased on social media hours before this cut of the movie was announced. The masked Wade Wilson will tell the toned-down Deadpool 2 story to an adult Fred Savage, calling back to when Peter Falk read to the adolescent Fred over 30 years ago.

Paul Wernick added during the interview with CinemaBlend that the PG-13 cut of Deadpool 2 came together particularly quickly, to the point that the new footage didn't even exist a full two months ago. Wernick said:

It was always something we talked about. But we shot, what, about six weeks ago? So it didn't exist, you know? We weren't holding anything back at the time [of the junket]. [The PG-13 cut] just didn't exist. Us, and Ryan, and the studio all came together and we were like, 'Gosh, you know, we really feel like there's a wonderful opportunity here, and we have a great idea for it.' So the studio kind of said, 'Let's do it.'

I can't help but wonder if this PG-13 Deadpool 2 is also testing the waters for the looming Disney Fox deal. Once that is finalized and in effect, the X-Men and Fantastic Four properties can be absorbed into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and perhaps the franchise will want to take a more family-friendly approach with Deadpool. Last year, Disney CEO Bob Iger said there might be an opportunity to create an R-rated brand for characters like Deadpool, but it's also easy enough to imagine the Merc with the Mouth's stories being adjusted to better fit in with the rest of the MCU.

The PG-13 version of Deadpool 2 hits theaters on December 21, although it's unclear how long it will be shown on the silver screen. How Much Ready Player One Should Need To Make To Be A Box Office Success

This past Easter weekend saw the release of Steven Spielberg's Ready Player One, and it resulted in the director's best opening for a film since 2008's Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Ready Player One pulled in $41.2 million over the weekend for a domestic total of $53.2 million, factoring in the Thursday debut. This opening bow may have exceeded expectations, but Ready Player One can't be considered a winner just yet. To be a true box office success, the film still has a ways to go and may need to somewhere between $420 million and $500 million globally just to break even.

Needing nearly a half a billion dollars just to break even is a tall order and a risky proposition. This is just an estimate, and I doubt the studio will tell us exactly what the amount is, but suffice it to say this movie needs to make money. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Ready Player One cost an expensive, but hardly unheard of, $175 million. If you've seen the film, you know that every bit of that money can be seen on screen, as this movie is a true visual spectacle, and the OASIS really comes to life and deserves to be seen on the biggest screen possible.

On top of the $175 million price tag, Ready Player One had a major marketing push that upped its overall cost significantly. Despite being a blockbuster from Steven Spielberg, Ready Player One is not a known property in the way most modern blockbusters are, and its source material is not super well known or part of a popular franchise. So the choice to spend so much on the film and marketing was a gamble that if audiences were aware of and properly sold on the film, they would come out for a new original blockbuster.

While the race is far from won, Ready Player One does have some positive signs going for it beyond its domestic opening weekend. Steven Spielberg's latest flick drew in $128 million in foreign markets over the weekend, bringing its worldwide total so far to $181.2 million. The overseas take includes a $61.7 million debut in the increasingly important Chinese market, which has provided financial justification for sequels in recent years. There is still a long way to go, but the film is also riding on positive reviews (75% on Rotten Tomatoes) and an A- CinemScore.

Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow are hoping for something like a Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle-like performance where the film has long legs at the box office and continues to pay down that bill. Whatever the true cost of the film, the investment will be worth it if this film succeeds. Author Ernest Cline is already working on a sequel novel, so a success here could mark the beginning of a new franchise and future box office returns. Ready Player One has a fair bit of room to work, too. The next big blockbuster is the Dwayne Johnson vehicle Rampage on April 13, but it's hard to say if it will enjoy the same kind of critical reception as Ready Player One. But other than that, there isn't much similar blockbuster competition until Avengers: Infinity War arrives at the end of the month and destroys all.
