Gladiator 2 Is Actually Moving Forward

Gladiator 2 Is Actually Moving Forward

Ready your battle cry, because it looks like 2000's Gladiator is getting a sequel, as director Ridley Scott closes in on beginning its development with Paramount. After finding success with revisiting his other hits, including Alien and Blade Runner, Scott is finally turning to his highly-acclaimed Best Picture winner about the former Roman general (Russell Crowe) who sets out to avenge his family after a corrupt emperor Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix) murders them and sends him to slavery.

According to Deadline, since Russell Crowe's Maximus didn't make it out alive at the end of Gladiator, the sequel will instead focus on the character Lucius. In the 2000 release, he was a young boy who was the son of Connie Nielson's Lucilla and nephew of Commodus. In the film, Maximus saved the boy during his quest to seek retribution for his own family. Ridley Scott is eyeing to direct the sequel, with The Town writer Peter Craig attached as well.

Considering the details given about Gladiator 2, one might expect the story to follow Lucius as our new protagonist, who would be around 20 years older and a grown man if the sequel sticks to the time gap of the films. The character was certainly impacted by the events of Gladiator, and could deal with the powerful burden of having the rights to the throne and also be at odds with a new adversary, much like Commodus was to Maximus. The sequel has been on director Ridley Scott's lips for quite some time. He hasn't been shy about his interest in continuing the saga to a film that earned 11 Oscar nominations in its heyday.

While the plot for Gladiator 2 doesn't seem to include Russell Crowe, Ridley Scott has previously talked about plans to potentially "bring back" his character by way of using a body of a dying warrior as a portal. This method seems a bit out of the realms of the Roman-set genre, but seeing Crowe in a Gladiator sequel could be a genuine crowd-pleaser if done right. One might imagine that what stinted the movie from getting another film in the past was the fact that its key characters are dead by the end of it, but now that Scott has had time to mull it over for over a decade, maybe he's developed the perfect way to continue what he started.

Until casting news for Gladiator 2 comes our way, we'll have to look at how Ridley Scott has developed his previous projects Blade Runner and Alien into ongoing franchises past his critically-acclaimed original works. 2017's Blade Runner 2049 did very well for itself as a sequel to a cult classic. The film implemented a tried-and-true leading man, Ryan Gosling, at its center while also offering up some nostalgia for the original with the inclusion of Harrison Ford, although Scott only took up the role of executive producer. On the other hand, with the Alien franchise, Scott opted for an entirely new cast of characters with Prometheus and Alien: Covenant, which makes sense since they were prequels.

Gladiator 2 is still early in development, so a release date has yet to be set, but be sure to check back with CinemaBlend for more exciting movie news updates.

Gladiator was a box office smash, earning $460 million. It also kicked off more interest in films and books on the ancient world. The films Troy, 300, and Alexander were believed to have gotten the green light because of "the Gladiator effect," as did the TV series Spartacus.

Disney's New Streaming Service Won't Feature R-Rated Content

Disney's New Streaming Service Won't Feature R-Rated Content

Disney movies and TV shows have been well represented on streaming platforms like Netflix and Hulu in the past few years, but soon the Mouse House will be setting up its own home for digital content. Last August, it was announced that Disney is creating is own streaming service that will be filled with both pre-existing and original content. However, if you're looking to watch any R-rated movies on the service, you'll be out of luck.

We're still over a year away from the Disney streaming service launching (it will happen sometime in fall 2019), but supposedly the decision has already been made to not feature any R-rated movies as part of the lineup. Instead, the R-rated fare will go to Hulu, which Disney owns a 30% stock in and currently has some of its movies available. This decision isn't terribly shocking, as most Disney theatrical projects, whether they hail from the main label or come from somewhere else like Marvel Studios, rarely go past PG-13. Disney also has a reputation for being family-friendly, so while some of the movies that will be available on the service may not be suitable for extremely young viewers, at least there's no chance that these young'uns could stumble across something that has excessive violence, a lot of cursing, etc.

Along with reporting about the lack of R-rated material on Disney's streaming service, Deadline also listed some of the movies that are being prioritized specifically for the service. Of particular note is the live action remake of The Sword and the Stone, which was originally intended to be a theatrical release, as well as a Lady and the Tramp remake, presumably re-creating the central animals Jungle Book-style. Other in-development movies include The Paper Magician, Stargirl, Togo, 3 Men and a Baby and Timmy Failure. Then there's the Anna Kendrick Christmas comedy Noelle and the Mark Waters-directed Magic Camp, both of which are in post-production and are heading to the streaming service. The plan right now is to produce four to five original movies per year, though as the years pass, perhaps that amount will increase.

It's safe to say that once the Disney streaming service gets off the ground, it's going to provide some major competition to the existing platforms, and it's doubtful that not including any R-rated movies will have a detrimental effect. Between its classic animated movies, Pixar projects, Marvel, Star Wars and plenty more, Disney will have enough to keep fans young and old entertained. So if you're eager to watch an R-rated theatrical presentation that hails from some corner of the Disney media empire, you'll need to stick with Hulu, or just go to Netflix and Amazon to see what other companies are cooking up.

Disney's upcoming streaming service won't try to compete directly with Netflix and Amazon, but will focus instead on quality — namely original programs from Disney's "Star Wars," Pixar

MoviePass Competitor Sinemia Is Having Some Customer Service Problems

MoviePass Competitor Sinemia Is Having Some Customer Service Problems

These days there is a lot of discussion about MoviePass. The theatergoing subscription service has struck a chord with moviegoers and shaken up the industry. But MoviePass isn't the only player in this game, and consumers have options if they are looking for a cinema subscription service. Competitor Sinemia is making a name for itself with a different kind of offering for movie fans, and much like MoviePass before it, Sinemia is going through some growing pains. Sinemia is currently having some customer service problems, as people are complaining that they are not receiving their membership cards within the promised timeframe.

Like MoviePass, Sinemia members receive a credit card with which they purchase their tickets. Some new Sinemia customers have not received their cards within the 7-day timeframe that the company specified, and yet they have already been charged for their membership. This has understandably led to some frustration and complaints from these customers, with some requesting refunds. In a statement to TechCrunch, Sinemia's CEO Rifat Oguz stated that the holdup is the result of increased demand for the new membership plans. Production has been increased, but delivery times are a little bit longer than usual. It was also noted that the first month of service doesn't start until members receive their cards, so although they may have been charged already, the month hasn't officially started, so these people who are waiting won't end up paying more.

MoviePass experienced a similar problem upon the introduction of its cheaper plan and struggled to keep up with consumer demand in the beginning. This influx of new customers for Sinemia is likely due to its introduction of a new plan that undercuts MoviePass on price. Sinemia's plans are a bit more complex with different tiers and the option of two-person plans. The newest sale plan is the Classic Plan that, for $4.99 a month, billed annually, allows subscribers to see 1 movie a month at any theater, as well as being able to purchase tickets in advance. While this doesn't give you the amount of movies as MoviePass's unlimited plan, it is half the price, and for those who go to the movies less frequently, it is probably quite appealing. Jumping up to $6.99 a month gets you 2 movies a month. The Elite tier plans add in the option of premium formats like 3D and IMAX with either 2 or 3 tickets a month at $9.99 and $14.99, respectively.

These customer service issues aren't ideal for Sinemia, but they shouldn't be much of a big deal going forward as long as they are corrected and Sinemia effectively communicates to consumers to align their expectations with the reality of how long their cards may actually take to arrive. If nothing else, this increased demand shows that Sinemia's new plans are popular and give the service extra traction in a marketplace where MoviePass has dominated the conversation. This popularity also shows that there is a clear consumer demand for an alternative to the traditional theatergoing experience.

Keep up with CinemaBlend for all the latest on the services competing for your movie-loving dollars, and be sure to check out our release schedule to see all the reasons you should go to the theater this year.

This Rotten Week: Predicting The Incredibles 2, Tag And Superfly Reviews

This Rotten Week: Predicting The Incredibles 2, Tag And Superfly Reviews

It's only been a few weeks since the release of Deadpool 2, but this weekend we are getting yet another superhero movie - though this one is much less adult-oriented and much more family friendly. And if that's not your speed, we also have a comedy about a neverending game of tag, and a reboot of a 70's cult classic. Get ready for The Incredibles 2, Tag and Superfly.Just remember, I'm not reviewing these movies, but rather predicting where they'll end up on the Tomatometer. Let's take a look at This Rotten Week has to offer.

When we last left the Parr Family, their superhero alter egos (Mr. Incredible and Elastigirl) along with the kids (Violet and Dash) had defeated Syndrome and reestablished themselves as the crimefighting family they'd always meant to be. The Incredibles (97%) crushed it with the critics, and was at the time just another in the very long line of Pixar Studios hits. Now we have The Incredibles 2, which picks up only moments after the original, and from the trailer it looks like we are getting a lot of the same... in a good way. The on-screen laughs, family dynamics and light-hearted nature around superheros are all on display, and I suspect we are in for another Pixar win.

At this point, we don't need to go through the superlatives of the studio. Every year they come out with another critical hit. Last year it was Coco (97%), the year before was Finding Dory (94%), and the list goes on. They are the premiere animation studio and it isn't particularly close. Looks like they have another hit on their hands with The Incredibles 2, and I suspect that few critics will give this one a negative review.

On the surface, a movie about a group of adults still playing the same game of tag they started 30 years earlier just shouldn't work at all. It sounds so stupid that you'd question how it was ever turned into a movie. And yet here we are with Jeremy Renner, Jon Hamm, Hannibal Burress and Jake Johnson (among others) doing just that. And Weirdly enough, there are enough funny moments in the trailer to give me hope this can actually be a real comedy.

Tag is based on a true story about a group of real-life friends who've been playing the same game of the titular playground diversion for decades. Considering I barely even talk to any friends from back in grade school, this kind of commitment feels completely foreign. It feels like the movie is too silly to score in the upper echelon of the Tomatometer, but I suspect it has enough laughs and just the right amount of emotion in the long-lasting friendships that critics score it above average.

I'm not a connoisseur of the original Superfly movies, so I don't know exactly how close this remake comes to the general beats of the one from the 1970s. I will say that this latest edition does everything humanly possible with the makeup and outfits to make you question your sanity and wonder if it is actually taking place four decades ago. But then the cars and guns come in, grounding you right back in our current time period. In this reboot, Youngblood Priest is an Atlanta hustler who makes a living doing... well, I'm not exactly sure what he does. It seems like he just kicks ass, trades crypto, and just basically looks cool all of the time.

If that's what Superfly is set out to do first and foremost, it certainly looks like it will succeed. That being said, I'm not totally convinced all of the glitz and glamour will be enough if the story doesn't hold up. It was difficult getting a handle on any kind of real plot, and I suspect that's what ultimately holds the film down on the Tomatometer. This is Director X's first widely released movie, and while I suspect it will perform decently at the box office, it will get middling reviews from critics.

I had only one out of three predictions fall within 10 percentage points of my estimate last time around, but the two misses were awfully close (only off by four points combined). Starting with the win, I had something of a head start on Hereditary (Predicted: 95% Actual: 93%), which will go down as one of the best-reviewed wide release films of the year. It's even more impressive considering it falls into the category of "horror movie" - but then again there is no questioning the moment that the genre is currently having.

Meanwhile, Ocean's 8 (Predicted: 55% Actual: 68%) fell just barely out of range and might even tick to within ten percent if a few more negative reviews come in. From the tone of the many reviews I read you'd have thought the score would have been much lower. Most seemed to have just been completely underwhelmed by the flick, even those who weren't directly comparing it to its Steven Soderbergh-directed predecessors. And yet the score is still pushing close to 70%. I'll stand by my original prediction, and do feel like the final score is something of an outlier when one actually reads the reviews.

Finally we have Hotel Artemis (Predicted: 46% Actual: 57%), which was another near miss. Some critics recognized it as B-movie win, featuring an amazing ensemble cast featuring Jodie Foster, Jeff Goldblum, Sterling K. Brown, Charlie Day, and more, while others thought it strived to be more and missed. That left the score really close to the middle, and prevented my prediction from meeting my standard of success.

Next time around we've got Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. It's gonna be a Rotten Week!
