X-Men: Dark Phoenix Trailer Has Screened, But When Will We See It?

The newest X-Men movie has been having a difficult time of late. The movie has reportedly gone through significant reshoots, seen its released date pushed back, and with the recent Disney/Fox merger approval, the entire franchise has seemingly been in limbo. However, it's being reported that a trailer for X-Men: Dark Phoenix was recently shown as part of a Fox product presentation in Russia, so maybe we'll get a look at the new movie very soon.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix is currently looking at a February 2019 release date, and based on the fact that we're now getting trailers for big movies opening as late as March 2019, like Captain Marvel, it's possible that the trailer that apparently made its debut in St. Petersburg recently, according to The Flick editor Nikita Byrkin, will be arriving for us shortly. If it exists, there's little reason for Fox to just sit on it.

While trailers almost always debut online first, they usually hit the internet just before they get attached to films in theaters. Fox doesn't actually have anything coming out for the next few weeks, with Bad Times at the El Royale, the next wide release coming from the studio on October 12. However, it's also possible we could see an X-Men: Dark Phoenix trailer attached to another comic book movie release, Sony's Venom, which is coming out the week before. Either way, it could mean that we might end up getting a look at Dark Phoenix online sometime in the next couple weeks.

We should have seen a trailer by now, as originally, X-Men: Dark Phoenix was set to release in November of this year, meaning that we likely would have seen a trailer over this past summer at the latest. However, both Phoenix and The New Mutants saw their release dates pushed back into 2019. There have even been rumors that some of the planned X-Men projects might never actually be released now that the Disney/Fox merger is moving forward, but as of now, it appears that everything will come out, eventually.

Fans are very curious to get a look at Dark Phoenix because the movie reportedly underwent some pretty extensive reshoots. At one point it was being said that the reshoot schedule was longer than principal photography, but it appears now that wasn't actually the case. Reshoots are standard, especially for movies as big as this one, but they seem to always get some fans concerned about the final product. Once we get a trailer, we'll be able to at least begin to judge what the final product will actually look like. Expect to be able to make that judgment pretty soon.

Why Tomb Raider Is The Best Video Game Movie So Far

Hollywood has been working for years to try and turn successful video games into successful movies. While they have been met with limited success, these studios have yet to really make a movie that has won over audiences on a broad scale. The most recent effort, Tomb Raider, was not the first great video game movie that so many of us have been waiting for, but it was the closest that we have come so far, and it was clearly a step in the right direction. It certainly qualifies as the best movie based on a game so far.

Tomb Raider wasn't perfect, but it was good. That by itself puts the movie above nearly all its competition. There are several things that Tomb Raider did right in making the transition from the video game to the theatrical release. Here are a few of them.

A Strong Lead PerformanceIf there's one thing that most of the reviews have agreed on, even those that didn't love the film, it's that whatever faults Tomb Raider has, Alicia Vikander is not one of them. The actress puts forth a strong performance as the new Lara Croft and is able to make her a believable action hero while also making her a relatable character. This is a Lara Croft you want to see overcome the odds, and you want to see just how she does it. It's possibly the best performance ever in a video game based film. She not phoning it in and she's not over the top. This is an "action hero" character to be sure, but not a character from a video game who is all powerful. This is what happens when you talk Oscar winners into playing video game characters.

It's A Real AdaptationPrevious video game movies have frequently taken the key characters and elements of a game and created a mostly original story. In many cases, this is necessary because actual narrative elements in the games being adapted were minor, if they existed at all. Tomb Raider, however, is a true adaptation of the plot of the 2013 video game of the same name. The movie takes creative liberties and does make changes, but generally the story follows the one created by Rhianna Pratchett for the game, and honestly, the places where it changes that story the most is where the movie falters. Direct adaptations are not necessary to make good movies, but this is a sign that video game stories have evolved to a point where real adaptation is possible where it really wasn't before. This is a movie truly based on a video game, not just borrowing bits and pieces, and it's better for it.

A Simple Story HelpsOne of the criticisms of Tomb Raider has been that the story isn't anything we haven't seen before, and this is true, but in many ways that helps the movie. Video games are designed to take players significantly more hours to complete than your average film. That allows games to craft massive worlds while still giving them the depth and explanation they require. Tomb Raider is more grounded in reality, even more so than the game it is based on, but that means it has less it needs to explain to the audience. We've seen this before, so we don't need tedious info dumps to explain the world that we're in. This allows the film to focus on the characters and the action.

The Competition Isn't GreatOk, so the fact is that part of the reason that Tomb Raider is the best video game movie yet created is that the competition isn't that tough. There have been some decent game movies in the past, but even the decent ones have serious problems, and while Tomb Raider isn't perfect, it overcomes most of the problems we've seen before. The story may be none too original, but it's a story that works. It doesn't require the audience to be familiar with the game. It's a solid action movie with some real highlights. We may still be waiting for a truly great video game movie, but at least now we have a good one.

JJ Abrams Reportedly Trying To Fix Star Wars Issues Through Episode IX

Since Disney purchased the rights to George Lucas' Star Wars franchise, there's been a ton of new and exciting content brought to the masses. This includes both main installments and standalone films, which help to expand the galaxy far, far away. And while the House of Mouse has made a ton of money with the franchise and already recouped the $4.05 billion investment made to acquire Lucasfilm, there have been some missteps as of late.

The last two Star Wars released were Rian Johnson's The Last Jedi, which continued the main narrative of the Skywalker Saga and Solo: A Star Wars Story. The latter was the second standalone film of the franchise, explaining the backstory behind characters like Han Solo, Lando Calrissian, and Chewbacca. But Solo was a box office disappointment, while The Last Jedi is arguably the most divisive film in the entire franchise.

But J.J Abrams is reportedly hoping to change this narrative, put the franchise back on a better course. Abrams is continuing to make massive deals, and a new report by Variety alleges that he's been tasked with putting the ultra-popular space opera back on track. There are no details as to how this might come about, but it should be fascinating to see how the galaxy far, far away continues to grow and change.

In the wake of Solo and The Last Jedi, it appears that Disney may be reevaluating its plans moving forward, in order to best service the fans and make oodles of money at the box office. Early rumors indicated that Star Wars may be abandoning their standalone movie plans, despite the massive success of Gareth Edwards' Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. With Solo ultimately being a box office bust and chock full of bad press, it's unclear if any more spinoffs are going to be produced.

If J.J. Abrams is helping to get the Star Wars back on track through some "course correction", it should be wild to see exactly how the franchise changes with Episode IX and beyond. Perhaps he'll bring things back to basics, and tell a story that is a bit more classic than the purposefully subversive one Rian Johnson brought with The Last Jedi. And with Solo a victim of behind the scenes dramatics, Abrams should also bring a more focused an relaxed set.

Should J.J. Abrams be trying to undo the "damage' done by Rian Johnson in The Last Jedi, it may be in vain. Johnson has been hired to develop his own trilogy of Star Wars films, which will go into affect after Episode IX hits theaters.
