Mission: Impossible's Rebecca Ferguson Has Already Seen Fallout 3 Times

Easily one of the most anticipated movies of the summer, thanks in part to a masterful trailer, is the sixth installment in a franchise that just keeps getting better, Mission: Impossible Fallout. Although the action movie doesn't release until next Friday, some lucky people have already gotten to see it and the early reviews have been hugely positive, indicating that audiences and fans of the franchise will really like what director Christopher McQuarrie has in store for them. But one person who really, really must like it is star Rebecca Ferguson, who has already seen it three times. She explained her approach to filmmaking and audience expectations, saying:

Tom always says he makes the film for the audience, but I don't. That may be really selfish. I just don't go in thinking: 'How will the audience take this?' I hope they enjoy it, but I do it for myself and the ride -- and to make something that I would like to see. I have watched this one three times now. [I like it] bloody goddam well.)

Rebecca Ferguson didn't mince words speaking to The Guardian regarding how well Mission: Impossible Fallout is holding up after three viewings. She said that she makes movies that she wants to watch, and in this case, she clearly really likes watching this one. She of course saw it at the premiere, but seeing it not one, but two other times speaks to her opinion of it. While Rebecca Ferguson, who plays Ilsa Faust in the film, obviously wouldn't say that a movie she is in is terrible, you don't see something three times if it's just okay.

Rebecca Ferguson also provides interesting insight into her approach to filmmaking here. We all know that Tom Cruise will do anything and everything to entertain and enthrall audiences, risking life and limb, and healing at an unnatural rate, and he is largely successful in it. For Rebecca Ferguson, she first and foremost makes the kinds of movies that she wants to see, which are fun rides that she gets something out of. Judging by the fact that she's seen it three times and the reactions so far, Mission: Impossible Fallout must be a hell of a ride.

Although she worries it's selfish, I think that Rebecca Ferguson's approach is as valid as any. You can't please everyone, and audience reactions could really get in your head, especially in this era of social media and occasionally vitriolic fanbases. You want fans to like it, but better to not get too caught up in things that are beyond your control. Of course, every actor is different. Rebecca Ferguson does movies she'd like to see and Tom Cruise is all about entertaining audiences. Some actors do it for the paycheck, others for the artistic challenge, and others because a role scares them. There is no right answer.

You can see Mission: Impossible Fallout for the first time, although probably not the last, when it rockets into theaters on July 27, at which point I assume Rebecca Ferguson will have seen it at least five times. Why Black Panther Was A Different Experience For Marvel Veterans Andy Serkis And Martin Freeman

In the comics, Ulysses Klaue and Everett Ross have long been categorized as Black Panther characters -- but on the big screen they actually appeared long before the king of Wakanda's solo movie. Their roles are certainly expanded in writer/director Ryan Coogler's film, but they respectively made their Marvel Cinematic Debuts in The Avengers: Age of Ultron and Captain America: Civil War. This has led to some diverse experiences for actors Andy Serkis and Martin Freeman -- and I recently had the chance to chat with them both about the contrast. Said Serkis,

I had literally a couple of days with Joss [Whedon]. It was establishing the character, and he was creating certainly a paradigm for that character, which was he's a man who wheels and deals with governments; who is an arms dealer; who is incredibly selfish. And then what Ryan did when I came into the movie with Klaue was actually looking at his slightly more unhinged, slightly madder side - the funner side! The fun potential you could have with a dangerous character.

Andy Serkis and Martin Freeman -- who will forever be connected thanks to their roles in The Hobbit -- were paired together for the Black Panther press day late last month, which offered me the opportunity to ask them simultaneously about their past Marvel Studios experiences. Discussing his first time playing Ulysses Klaue, Serkis offered that it did a nice job putting down the groundwork for the character, but followed up saying that Ryan Coogler really let him lean into the more chaotic side of the villain's mind.

As for Martin Freeman, his answer was a bit different because his time on the set of Captain America: Civil War apparently wasn't really as in-depth as Andy Serkis' was making The Avengers: Age of Ultron. And thinking back on the film, that makes sense. Freeman basically has two big scenes in the blockbuster, but serves more as a government figurehead than anything (not unlike Clark Gregg's Agent Phil Coulson was in Phase One of the Marvel Cinematic Universe). Answering my question about comparing his past Marvel experience to Black Panther, the actor said,

In all honestly, and in fairness to the Russos who I respect tremendously, I had comparatively so little to do in Civil War, [so] I got to know Ryan a lot more. I liked everything about working with Ryan. He was very low key, very committed, hard-working - he knew what he wanted. But he also was very trusting of us, wasn't he? He wanted the scenes to be open and new, and for us to bring whatever we wanted to bring.

Zack Snyder Confirms Yet Another Darkseid Reference In Justice League

The production of Justice League was troubled to say the least. The movie saw an entirely new director take over the reshoots and with the movie not performing as well as expected at the box office, the future of the entire DC universe is somehwat up in the air. However, original Justice League director Zack Snyder has recently confirmed yet another way the film was meant to hint toward a future confrontation for the DC heroes with the villain Darkseid. Check it out.

The reference was called out by the co-host of the DC Films Hub Podcast John Aaron Garza, who meme-ifies a line that Batman says in Justice League which was a reference to the dream he had in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. He makes reference to something "darker" and Zack Snyder responds on the social networking platform Vero that the line was meant to be a direct reference, though an unknowing one for the character, to Darkseid.

The DC universe films went through a lot of changes over the years and initially the movie that became Justice League was going to be the first of two films. It seems clear that the initial plan was for the first Justice League movie to introduce Steppenwolf and lay the ground work for a sequel that saw Darkseid, one of the biggest villains in all of DC Comics, to make his appearance. Over the years a lot changed and Justice League was reduced to one movie. However, a lot of the initial work that had been done to set up the sequel clearly survived.

This isn't the first time we've learned of what the intentions were regarding Darkseid initially. In various incarnations of Justice League we might have even seen the character on screen, however briefly.

Of course, now, whether or not we'll ever see Darkseid is unclear. Within the DC film universe Steppenwolf has been defeated and the post credits sequence of the movie seemed to set up a future League confrontation with Lex Luthor, not a furthering of the galactic plot of the movie that had just wrapped up. The future of DC's films, as far as what we know for sure is on the way, is a series of solo projects for Aquaman, Wonder Woman, and Shazam. If and when the Justice League comes back together is unknown, and what they'll be doing when that happens is even less clear.

It's frustrating for many because there was clearly a vision at play here and we'll never get to see exactly what it was. Even Justice League ended up as something other than what Zack Snyder wanted, though we may never know exactly by how much. Still, it's nice to see all the work that was done, even if it may evnetually mean nothing.
