The Last Jedi's Rian Johnson Really Seems To Be Digging Mission: Impossible-Fallout

We are just a few days away from the release of Mission: Impossible-Fallout and it's safe to say that the hype is real. The movie has gotten heaps of praise from critics and CinemaBlend almost gave it a perfect score. As should come as no surprise, the action scenes from director Christopher McQuarrie are getting the most praise, with the film possessing some next level action. McQuarrie's work on the film has especially impressed Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson, who took to social media to gush about how nuts Fallout is.

Rian Johnson proved that he knows a thing or two about filming action in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which has one of the best action scenes in the whole franchise, but even Johnson admits that Christopher McQuarrie is leagues above everyone else. Johnson wrote on Twitter that the action in Mission: Impossible-Fallout isn't just spectacle or cool stunts (though, I'm sure there's plenty of the latter courtesy of Tom Cruise), but it's great filmmaking. According to Johnson, McQuarrie's action is filled with tension and clarity, urging everyone to bow down before him.

Well, almost everyone. Johnson follows up his post with a quick reminder that George Miller is still the immortal master of all action. McQuarrie, however, reigns as king of the mortals.

Miller cemented himself as one of the best action directors ever with the release of Mad Max: Fury Road, the best action movie to hit theaters in the last decade. That movie created huge waves when it came out in 2015, even scoring a rare Best Picture Oscar nomination for a genre film. Will Fallout be the first true successor to this action gem? Tough to say, but it is worth mentioning that some critics did compare Fallout to Fury Road in initial reactions.

Mission: Impossible-Fallout sees Tom Cruise return as Ethan Hunt, who once again finds himself on a mission to save the world. Joined by Rebecca Ferguson, Ving Rhames, and Simon Pegg, Cruise's Hunt must face the fallout of a decision he made during a previous mission and prevent the organization known as the Syndicate from unleashing a nuclear arsenal.

Ryan Reynolds And Deadpool Celebrated The Fox/Disney Merger In The Perfect Way

This morning, just after midnight, the merger between 21st Century Fox and the Walt Disney Company became official. That meant that numerous franchises and characters have now joined the House of Mouse, and it looks like Deadpool could not be happier. Ryan Reynolds posted an image to his Twitter account commemorating the new era which shows Deadpool heading off to join his new bosses. Check it out.

The image shows Deadpool sitting in a classic yellow school bus, which happens to have the Disney name on it. The Merc with a Mouth is wearing the classic Mickey Mouse ears, which you figure have to be standard issue for all cast members of the Walt Disney Company. He looks like a little kid on the way to his first day of school, and for him I suppose it is. He needs to learn exactly what the plan is for him under this new corporate structure.

The film rights to the Deadpool character are officially in the hands of Marvel once again as the result of this merger. This creates an opportunity for Deadpool and his fellow mutants to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe, though it's unclear exactly how, or even if, such a thing would work.

Disney CEO Bob Iger had previously stated that he had no problem continuing to make Deadpool movies that continue to be mature titles. However, at this point the only project on the drawing board, an X-Force film that would include Deadpool as one member of a team, is maybe dead. Does this mean there's no place in the new Marvel for the old Deadpool after all?

It will probably be some time before we hear any major announcements regarding the future of Deadpool or any other of the major franchises that Disney just took over. There's a lot of work to be done and a lot of decisions to be made. Disney has to learn where the various in-development projects currently stand, decide which ones the studio wants to make a priority, which may not be identical to the way Fox felt, and which ones can sit on the back burner.

At the same time, it's also possible Disney already has a plan in place. The studio announced news Star Wars movies essentially concurrently with the announcement that it had purchased Lucasfilm. If Disney has decided it wants Deadpool to be an important part of the future, we could get a release date for X-Force or an official announcement that Deadpool 3 is coming literally any day.

If and when we do see Deadpool again, you can be pretty sure he'll be kicking down the fourth wall with numerous jokes about what it's like working for Disney now. The irony is just too much fun to ignore.

Balancing the R-rated version of Deadpool with the company whose name is synonymous with family friendly entertainment is clearly going to be a delicate matter. The character is incredibly popular and it seems unlikely Disney is going to want to say goodbye to the money that could be made. At the same time, don't expect to see Deadpool walking around Disneyland anytime soon.

How Much Ant-Man And The Wasp Made On Opening Night

It's hard to believe we have already hit a point in time when yet another Marvel movie is coming out. I'd personally hate to be a part of the movie that came out after the epic-in-scale and highly touted Avengers: Infinity War, but the Ant-Man franchise has always been just sort of a fun side component in the MCU, and as such, putting Ant-Man And The Wasp after Infinity War was probably the smart call. Thanks to the heightened profile of the Marvel Cinematic Universe combined with the fact it's 4th of July weekend, Ant-Man And The Wasp is off to a good start at the box office. Early estimates indicate the movie made at least $11 million on opening night.

The movie, in fact, may have made up to $13 million, and more likely landed somewhere in that range, according to Deadline's early estimates. When comparing that to opening night for the original Ant-Man movie, this preview night was hopping. The original origin flick only brought in $6.4 million on opening night. That movie went on to make a little over $519 million worldwide, which is one of the lowest MCU movies ever. The only movies that have a lower box office total are Captain America: The First Avenger and The Incredible Hulk. For reference, even Thor: The Dark World made more money worldwide.

For opening night comparison's sake, Avengers: Infinity War made $39 million on preview night, so it's really not close. Granted, that was the best showing ever on opening night for a Marvel movie, and I'd imagine it will be a little while before an MCU movie reaches such great heights again. Earlier this year Black Panther also made $25 million on opening night, so again, Ant-Man And The Wasp doesn't stack up. However, Ant-Man And The Wasp should beat Doctor Strange when the final numbers come in, as that movie only made $9.4 million on opening night. The numbers should be in line with what Guardians of the Galaxy made on opening night back in 2014, as well.

Leading in to the release of Ant-Man And The Wasp, the question was whether or not interest in this sequel would be very high. The film has the added benefit of Marvel's first headlining female protagonist in Evangeline Lilly's The Wasp. People are also really invested in the MCU right now, thanks to what happened in Infinity War, and Ant-Man and the Wasp does tie into this spring's movie in potentially key ways. That may be enough for the movie to open to an estimated $75-$80 million this weekend, and we'll let you know if the numbers go even higher, or fall short.
