Michael Fassbender Still Pulls Something Very Specific From The X-Men Comics When Preparing For These Films

By now, the actors in the X-Men ensemble should know their characters almost as well as they know themselves. Core cast members like James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender have been occupying the roles of Charles Xavier and Magneto, respectively, for the better part of four films now dating back to 2011s X-Men: First Class so they have tangible experience to draw off of when they return to the role for the next sequel.

But when it comes to a storyline like Dark Phoenix, which is inspired by a very popular comic book series, I was genuinely curious how much the cast pulls from the book and how much they rely on what they have established themselves in the mutant community. Do they need the comic, or would they prefer to lean on what they created themselves in movies like X-Men: Apocalypse, or X-Men: Days of Futures Past.

Michael Fassbender, as it turns out, pulls something very specific from the X-Men comics as he prepares. During an X-Men press day in London, the actor tells CinemaBlend:

I refer to the comic book primarily for the action beats. And its really just simply to find various poses. It was kind of cool in this film because the grimacing behind the helmet, in a cartoon its quite a cool image. And I thought, Ok, its an opportunity to take that image and put it into the film. Or you know, various poses that Magneto has. Sometimes he has this lotus pose when hes flying or hovering. For me, Ill have those images for inspirational, physical beats.

Michael Fassbender isnt wrong. Magneto often has incredible physical poses in the X-Men comics that reflect the sheer heft of his powers.

And theres an excellent scene in Dark Phoenix where Jean Grey (Sophie Turner) is manipulating the blades of a helicopter, and Magneto (Fassbender) uses his own gifts to resist her and protect the soldiers who are still in the vehicle. It allows Fassbender to strike some menacing, intense Magneto poses that no doubt were lifted straight from the comics.

Rule #236 of horror movies: never have children; no good can come from it. They either turn out to be evil or prove to be a huge liability when trying to escape whatever horror is tormenting you. That timeless lesson is affirmed in the unsettling and creepy trailer for The Prodigy, which finds a young mother concerned about her son's disturbing behavior. Check it out below.

This trailer takes a very minimalistic approach to selling The Prodigy and it is to its benefit. Instead of giving us a bunch of scares or over-explaining the story, the trailer simply gives us the tone, the basic premise and one good scare, leaving everything else to our imagination.

What works really well is that this trailer is very slow and methodical, building the tension throughout the first minute with just a simple scene. Instead of lulling us in to calm trance where we feel safe and relaxed, the metronome is deeply unsettling, acting as a harbinger of the inescapable darkness to come.

The tagline for The Prodigy is 'What's wrong with Miles?' and the answer is clearly, 'a lot'. This trailer does a good job of letting you ask yourself that question for the first minute or so. We see that this kid is in some sort of therapy and he has mismatched colored eyes, but you're left to speculate what exactly is going on.

Colm Feore's delivery here is super creepy, and you know that even though what he is saying seems innocuous enough, a turn is coming. And come it does when he tells Miles that they are going back to the time before this body.

At that point I was thinking that Miles is some sort of reincarnation of a past evil but, Colm Feore's character then implies that some sort of supernatural force (Paimon?) is possessing Miles. Even then the trailer holds back by not showing us Miles' response.

Delivering a major jump scare at the end of a relatively calm trailer seems to be a trend of late and the trailer for The Prodigy delivers on that account. Miles tells his mother, played by Orange is the New Black's Taylor Schilling that he is scared, and he runs into her arms at which point he turns into a naked dude that grabs her by the head. Next time tell that kid to suck it up and go back to sleep.

It's fascinating that this trailer doesn't explicitly show what Jackson Robert Scott's Miles' did to that causes his mother so much concern, or what exactly makes him the prodigy of the movie's title.

We see that he is a talented artist, but that's about it. Presumably while Miles is excelling at some things, some of his other behavior sets off the alarm bells. There are flashes of a door being broken through and somebody running, but we don't yet know if those flashes are memories of Miles' life or those of whatever is possessing him.

The Prodigy is directed by Nicholas McCarthy, whose last feature film was 2014's At the Devil's Door. The script for the film comes from Jeff Buhler, who has a positively huge 2019 having worked on the scripts for The Prodigy, Jacob's Ladder, Grudge and Pet Sematary. Clearly horror is his thing and he has a lot of film's vying for a position of prominence in the ongoing horror renaissance.

We're including Avengers: Infinity War spoilers, here, but if you haven't caught he movie, yet, get on that.

As it inches closer and closer to $2 billion worldwide, it's clear that a lot of people really liked Avengers: Infinity War. Marvel fans seem to be the ones most taken with the blockbuster, but the movie hasn't been wholly immune to criticisms. One of the chief complaints from fans is that deaths in the film ultimately have no stakes because some of the characters already have sequels announced. It's not an entirely off-base critique, considering people familiar with Avengers 4 have spoken out about the deaths in the movie being legitimate. Still, the Russo Brothers, for one, think that anything is possible and sequels shouldn't be used to assume what happens in Avengers 4.

Here's the thing, I think it's important to remember anything is possible in the MCU [Marvel Cinematic Universe]. Just because there's a sequel on the books doesn't mean... people become accustomed to time moving linearly in the MCU. That doesn't necessarily have to be the case. There's a lot of very inventive ways of where the story can go from here.

Avengers: Infinity War director Anthony Russo addressed the criticism of the superhero movie and how the already-announced sequels take some of the punch out of Infinity War's gut-punching ending. Does the fact that a Black Panther 2 is happening dictate that all will be right with the character by the time the credits roll in Avengers 4? Everyone at Marvel has said that the deaths in Infinity War matter and the directors are sticking to their guns. In an interview with HuffPost, Anthony Russo stated that anything can happen in the MCU and people shouldn't assume that just because a sequel has been announced that it will take place after Infinity War.

Co-director Joe Russo took that a step further, citing specific examples of how the MCU can play fast and loose with the timeline. There are four years Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Infinity War, so the announced Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 could take place during that time period and avoid the ending of Infinity War altogether.

There's four years between Guardians 2 and Infinity War. That's a long time, and a lot of Guardians stories to tell. Again, as Anthony said, don't expect everything to move forward in a linear fashion in the Marvel universe.

While for the most part, the movies have taken place in relative real time, Marvel has lately been experimenting with when the movies happen. Ant-Man and the Wasp take place before Infinity War and Captain Marvel takes place in the 90s, though, that's arguably to help set up Avengers 4 and not have to deal with the ending of Infinity War. Still, with stories like Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 and Black Panther 2, comments have indicated people were really looking forward to seeing what the future would look like for the characters, especially how it felt for Spider-Man to eventually become an Avenger and for Wakanda to really open up to the world and become a more prominent nation. Depending on what happens with the story, the effects of Infinity War could stop both of those storylines from fully fleshing out, even if sequels end up being set before Infinity War.

Regardless of the criticism, that doesn't really make Infinity War any less enjoyable, so check it out while it's still in theaters.

There was a time when Jim Carrey was one of the biggest movie stars in the entire world. A comedian who has carved out a legacy for himself as one of the most unique voices in entertainment, the Ace Ventura actor took a notable step back from the Hollywood spotlight years ago and became far more selective about the roles he chose to take. So why did he do it? Well, in a recent interview, Carrey addressed his step back from Hollywood and explained that he didn't like the increasingly corporate and by-committee direction of Hollywood. The actor revealed:

I just didn't want to be in the business anymore. I didn't like what was happening, the corporations taking over and all that. And maybe it's because I felt pulled toward a different type of creative outlet and I really liked the control of painting --- of not having a committee in the way telling me what the idea must be to appeal to a four-quadrant whatever.

It's a simple enough explanation, isn't it? Hollywood has changed quite a bit since Jim Carrey's broke into the mainstream in films like Dumb & Dumber and The Mask back in the early 1990s, and as he laid out in his recent profile in THR, he didn't like the increasingly corporate approach to filmmaking that felt tailored for mass appeal to wide demographics. As a result, he has shifted his focus away from acting and has branched out into the world of painting as a form of expression, with a particular slant towards political satire in his art.

After all, it's not like Jim Carrey has anything left to prove on the big screen. Between his comedic roles in movies like Bruce Almighty, his (arguably underrated) super villain performance as The Riddler in Batman Forever, and his dramatic turns in films like The Truman Show and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, the guy has virtually done it all.

With all of that said, Jim Carrey did not leave Hollywood entirely. He has remained at least partially active as a performer, with roles in films like Dumb & Dumber To, Kick-Ass 2, and The Bad Batch defining his most recent years on the big screen. Moreover, Carrey was also recently announced as the actor to take on the role of Dr. Ivo Robotnik in the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog adaptation, so he still has some potential blockbuster gas left in the tank as well. That said, the overall arc of his career seems to suggest that he has moved away from the more active tentpole work of his earlier years.
