Matt Reeves Is Playing Coy About Ben Affleck's Involvement In The Batman

Nobody is quite sure what's really going on with the planned Batman solo movie. While the project does seem to be moving forward, though quite slowly, it's far from confirmed that the current DC film universe Batman, Ben Affleck, will actually be in it. Director Matt Reeves isn't helping the situation. While he confirms that the script, which he expects to have a completed draft soon, is connected to the existing film universe, he's not confirming Ben Affleck will be in it. According to Reeves...

There are ways in which all of this connects to DC, to the DC universe as well. We're one piece of many pieces so I don't want to comment on that except to say that I'm focused very specifically on this aspect of the DC world.

The fact that the Batman solo movie does, in fact, connect to the DC universe is important because we know that not all movies that Warner Bros. is currently working on actually do. There's a Joker movie coming that won't be related to the existing version of the character played by Jared Leto, and it was always possible the Batman movie could end up working like that. However, it seems from what Matt Reeves recently said at a Television Critics Association panel (via Slashfilm) this movie will absolutely be part of that universe.

But with that being the case, you'd expect Ben Affleck to be in it as he is the current DC universe Batman. Matt Reeves does say that he's still speaking with Affleck, but he's clearly stopping short of making a statement on the man's participation as an actor one way or another. Affleck himself has suggested that his days as Batman might be numbered, and it's not like Reeves saying that Affleck would be reprising his role would actually be news WB would want to keep under wraps, so it certainly does sound like there's a possibility that somebody else could play Batman here.

Of course, both things could still be true. Wonder Woman was a movie that took place years before Justice League, it just happened to star the same actress because the character is immortal. While Reeves has stated that the new film is not based on the popular Year One comic, it doesn't mean we won't see some sort of flashback story that sees another actor play a younger version of Affleck's Batman.

Matt Reeves says the new Batman movie could start shooting as early as the spring or early summer of next year, which means these questions will need to have definitive answers sooner rather than later. It looks like the Batman movie is clearly going to happen, but who will be the Batman is still an open question.

Black Panther has become one of Marvel's biggest movies and it's happened nearly overnight. With that sort of success, you want to strike while the iron is hot, so you can be sure Disney will be looking to translate big screen success into theme park attendance. While we shouldn't go expecting construction on a Black Panther ride at Disneyland to start immediately, Disney CEO Bob Iger recently hinted that such a thing could very well happen down the road. Until then, we have the Black Panther character meet-up to enjoy and the expectation of a lot more Black Panther merchandise. Regarding that theme park attraction, though, Bob Iger recently hinted that a Black Panther ride is very much on the table, saying...

Bob Iger also confirmed during the investor conference call at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media & Telecom Conference that more Marvel material was on the way to Disney Parks in California, Europe, and Asia, though no specifics were given. It's long been rumored that a new land dedicated to Marvel was being planned for Disney's California Adventure, the park across the plaza from Disneyland. With the first Marvel ride, Guardians of the Galaxy: Mission - Breakout now constructed on the edge of where that land is expected, it seems likely, though it has never been confirmed by Disney Parks. It's a safe bet that if Disney's Imagineers weren't considering a Black Panther attraction for that space before, they certainly are now.

Before we get the Wakandan Vibranium train roller coaster, one place we can expect to see to more Black Panther in Disney parks is inside the gift shops. Bob Iger says that when Disney realized watching an early cut of Black Panther that the movie was going to be something special, it reached out to its retail partners to amp up the merchandising arm of the promotion. If Disney did that with its partnerships, you can be sure it also did the same thing internally. People are going to want shirts and hats and toys to celebrate the character. Iger fully expects Black Panther to be Disney's 12th billion dollar franchise. It's very nearly done that at the box office already, and when merchandising numbers are included it's very likely already there.

This is especially true because Black Panther is currently a character you can meet and get a photo with at Disney's California Adventure. Lines were nearly three hours long on the character's first day in the park and Bob Iger said on the conference call that lines are still regularly over an hour long. It takes longer to get a picture with Black Panther than it does to get on most rides.

Black Panther is something people like, and Disney Parks are all about bringing the properties people love to life. Expect to see more of Black Panther in Disney theme parks over the next several years.

At this point, Justice League hit theaters more than year and a half ago. However, in that time, the clamoring from the fanbase regarding a Zack Snyder cut or #Snydercut of the film has not died down in the least. (Zack Snyder constantly sharing backstory stuff likely has not helped matters.) Which means the cast is still getting asked about their feelings regarding a lengthier Snyder cut of the DC and Warner Bros. film.

This weekend while Justice League actor Ray Fisher was appearing at Celebrity Fan Fest in San Antonio, Texas, the actor reportedly mentioned hed love to see the Snyder cut of Justice League. Unfortunately, hes not the person with the keys to the kingdom, however, so he noted hed like the Snyder cut with a caveat, saying, If I had the power, absolutely.

Later, Ray Fisher also reflected on the fact there is plenty of Cyborgs story left to tell (via Super Bros. Movies), sharing what he would like to see in the future from Cyborgs movie. He noted:

I think there's still some repairing that has to take place between Cyborg and his father, in that relationship. I think there's also a lot of ground to explore how much technology is too much technology for humanity, and how fast technology is evolving, and the role that Cyborg could play in potentially mitigating the issues that would come about because of that. You're dealing with a character who can, with a thought, launch all of the nuclear devices on the planet.

This isnt the first time Ray Fisher has spoken out continuing Cyborgs story. Hes previously spoken out about how much of his characters narrative was cut by the time Justice League hit theaters. But hes said he has no regrets about the way the movie panned out, because the integrity of Cyborg was upheld.

Its clear the actor had a blast playing the superhero and hopes more opportunities will present themselves in the future. He also said at Celebrity Fan Fest,

In Justice League, I think we see Cyborg fighting against the machine and I would like to see what it would be like if he becomes so comfortable with himself that he actually gives in too much to the machine side, and it ends up being too much so. There's really no end to the kinds of stories you could tell about a story like this, especially as technology is evolving.

Still, there are plenty of plotlines related to Cyborg that could be explored more fully, and Ray Fisher has said previously he'd like to see more about the loss of Victor's mother, as well. Eventually, the character may get his own solo movie to flesh out all of this stuff, although as recently as a few months ago, Fisher was open that a movie may be more expensive to produce than it would be worth. So, we'll have to wait and see on that point.

While we wait to see how DC's movie realm pans out, it's clear the desire for a Snyder cut of Justice League will not be not dying anytime soon. Just this past week we reported there is a Go Fund Me getting some traction that allowed DC fans to collect $20,000. That money will be used to fly a banner over Comic-Con petitioning Warner Bros. to release the Snyder cut.
