Why Spider-Man Into The Spider-Verse's Filmmakers Thought Doc Ock Was Going To Be A Problem

Superheroes movies are frequently accused of having a villain problem when they try to cram too many popular bad guys into a single film. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse basically gave this entire concept the finger by filling it with numerous different baddies. The film handled them all with a very deft hand, but the filmmakers admit there was at least one they were a bit concerned about. Into the Spider-Verse director Peter Ramsey says that there was a concern during production that the film's version of Doctor Octopus might have a problem coming across as a substantial villain. For the longest time one of our concerns about that character was, is she only going to be goofy and quirky, are we ever going to be able to make her a formidable enough presence in the movie to really seem like a bad guy that you were actually going to be concerned about.

When we first meet Olivia Ocatvius in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, quirky is a good word to describe her. She's a pretty stereotypical version of a scientist who works better with math than with people. She spouts a lot of jargon very quickly and when she first sees Spider-Man, she appears to come across more like a star struck fan than a super villain.

Of course, that's all something of an act, as it turns out Olivia Octavius is actually this dimension's version of the well known Spider-Man villain Doctor Octopus. When we discover this, she undergoes something of a personality transformation from science geek to vicious killer.

While several other classic Spider-man villains make appearances throughout Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Olivia Octavius is one of the bigger ones, so making her believable as a formidable opponent for not just one, but several Spider-Men, was important to the film. Peter Ramsey credits voice actress Katherine Hahn in one of the extras attached to the Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse Blu-ray, saying she made all fears that the character would not work disappear...

When Katherine Hahn got on the mic man, all that stuff instantly went away.

It's understandable how making the balance work with Olivia Octavius is a potential problem. On the one hand, you want her to look like she's just a normal scientist; it's what makes the reveal that she's actually one of the villains work. At the same time, if you make her look too campy, then the audience won't buy her as a menacing threat later.

As with pretty much every element of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, it works. The film was one of the best of the year because every single element, from character to set design works together flawlessly. The character's quirkiness doesn't go away when Doc Ock comes out, rather, we see that it was just part of a larger personality.

With sequels and spinoffs to Into the Spider-Verse planned, we certainly have to wonder if we'll see Olivia Octavius again. She's certainly a powerful enough villain to anchor a movie rather than simply play henchman to Kingpin.

These Are The 10 Most Anticipated Movies of 2019, According To Survey

As the holiday lights of the season start to see their final days, cinephiles are starting to shift their focus away from reflecting on the best of 2018 to excitement for the new year's coming attractions at the movies.

Just as Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War dominated conversation this past year, moviegoers are most intrigued by the fate of the MCU in 2019. They're also homesick for the next Star Wars episode, and excited for the Toy Story sequel and upcoming nostalgic live-action Disney remakes. Check out the top 10 list below:

The results are based on more than 3,500 responses from a new Fandango survey (via Entertainment Weekly) recorded throughout December. It's no surprise that Avengers: Endgame tops the list, thanks to the jaw-dropping cliffhanger Marvel fans were left with at the end of Infinity War over the summer. Fans have been anticipating the conclusion of the Infinity War storyline since 2014, when the project was first announced.

Captain Marvel's position at No. 2 further reflects the MCU's dominance. The character's introduction could very well have an impact on Endgame too. Fans are especially excited for Captain Marvel because it will also mark the studio's first female-led superhero film. Another one of the surveys ranked Brie Larson's debut as Carol Danvers as the most anticipated actress in 2019.

It's no surprise Star Wars: Episode IX takes the third spot, because the film's official title and trailer have yet to drop, whereas Endgame and Captain Marvel's marketing are well underway. Episode IX will see the return of J.J. Abrams at the helm, and supposedly conclude the Skywalker saga once and for all. Solo: A Star Wars Story may have bombed in 2018 but this installment is over 40 years in the making.

Two more high-profile sequels at least partly connected to Disney -- Sony/Marvel Studios' Spider-Man: Far from Home and Pixar's Toy Story 4 -- round out the top five. The popularity of the characters alone is unquestionable, but it helps that audiences love Tom Holland's Spidey and it's been almost 10 years since Woody and Buzz graced the big screen.

The outlier on the list is M. Night Shymalan's Glass, the mysterious sequel to two past films from the writer/director -- 2000's Unbreakable and 2016's Split. The upcoming movie looks to be a blend of a psychological thriller and superhero-type action. It stars Bruce Willis, Samuel L. Jackson, and James McAvoy. The January release is predicted to make an impressive $70 million opening weekend.

Taking up spots seven through nine are Disney's upcoming remakes of their animated classics, with The Lion King leading the pack. The new Lion King already broke the record for the most viewed trailer debut for the studio within 24 hours. More records may follow, as the original is one of the most beloved films of all time.

Aladdin has fans excited for its fresh faces, Mena Massoud and Naomi Scott, as the two stars also topped Fandango's surveys for top rising movie stars. Dumbo is directed by Tim Burton and has an impressive cast including Colin Farrell, Michael Keaton, Eva Green, and Danny DeVito.

Amidst a sea of Disney releases, which dominates 80% of the list, is Warner Bros.'s dramatic story of DC's iconic villain in Joker. Joaquin Phoenix is taking on the role in a character study of the clown-faced criminal, with creative liberties outside the DCEU or source material.

Honorable mentions are perhaps It: Chapter Two, X-Men: Dark Phoenix, Shazam!, Hellboy, and Frozen 2. It may surprise fans that they did not make the list of top 10 anticipated blockbusters, though do show up on Fandango's surveys in other categories.

Netflix has had a lot of success in recent months picking up movies that were looking for theatrical distribution and debuting them on the streaming service instead, but there's one film Netflix wanted it couldn't get. It seems that the production team behind Crazy Rich Asians had to choose between competing bids between Warner Bros. and Netflix. One offer would get the movie, focused on an entirely Asian cast on the big screen, the other would make the team behind the film a lot of money. Just how much money. Enough to make Kevin Kwan, the author of the novel the film is based on as rich as the characters in his story. According to Kwan...

The Netflix deal was massive. It would have included a trilogy of films, with complete artistic freedom, and seven figures for everybody with a stake in Crazy Rich Asians. Everybody just becomes an instant millionaire. That had to be hard to turn down and it sounds like it was, but in the end, Kevin Kwan and director Jon M. Chu decided that, if they took the money, they would just end up spending it on another try at making a movie that would put Asians front and center on the big screen. What they wanted was the exposure, not the money, so that's what they went with.

It certainly does bode well for Crazy Rich Asians that the film was in such high demand. Clearly, both studios believed there was an audience for it, even if they saw different ways of bringing the film to market. While Netflix does usually put its films out for theatrical release, they end up in theaters at the same time they debut on the streaming service. Without an exclusive window most theaters won't run the films, and since the movie is available at home for subscribers, they don't tend to do well at the box office for the theaters that do run them.

While I'm sure the Warner Bros. deal itself was a pretty good one, it shows just how dedicated the team behind Crazy Rich Asians was to the broader purpose of getting Asians on the big screen in leading roles. According to The Hollywood Reporter, everybody that was advising them was urging them to take the better financial deal. The rest of the producers had deferred to Kwan and Chu to make the decision of which deal to take.

Currently, Crazy Rich Asians is looking to have an opening weekend somewhere in the neighborhood of about $20 million, which is pretty solid for a romantic comedy. It will make its all-important big screen debut August 15.
